Christ the King Lutheran Church Endorses Bond
For consideration of the Council, Christ the King Lutheran Church, Sept. 27, 2020
WHEREAS, Christ the King Lutheran Church of Cary, North Carolina is a Christian congregation that is guided by scripture-based values and qualities in our actions and behaviors and committed to advocating for peace and social justice, to serving our neighbors in our community across the street and across the world, and to empowering those in marginalized communities;
WHEREAS, the congregation of Christ the King Lutheran Church as a whole has expressed strong support for advocacy on the issues of affordable housing and homelessness;
WHEREAS, the Raleigh Housing Authority has said that as of Sept. 1, 2020, 4,196 households were on the city’s waiting list for public housing, 6,572 households were on the waiting list for Section 8 housing voucher assistance, and 1,925 households were on both lists;
WHEREAS, housing for lower-income residents also is in short supply throughout the rest of Wake County, including Cary, which is adjacent to Raleigh and is part of the same overall housing market;
WHEREAS, the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the need of our essential workers − including teachers, police, firefighters, caregivers, nurses, grocery store workers − for affordable places to live in reasonable proximity to their jobs;
WHEREAS, the Raleigh City Council has proposed an $80 million bond issue to finance the city’s affordable housing initiatives, supplying a projected total of 1,766 affordable units over the next five years;
WHEREAS, the proposed bond issue will be voted upon by Raleigh residents in a referendum during the Nov. 3 general election period;
WHEREAS, Christ the King Lutheran Church has members who are Raleigh residents; and
WHEREAS, the benefits of strong action and additional funding by the largest municipality in Wake County to support affordable housing needs will provide many benefits to surrounding communities and their residents;
Now therefore be it resolved by the Congregation Council of Christ the King Lutheran Church that Christ the King Lutheran Church strongly supports voter approval of the Raleigh Affordable Housing Bond referendum to increase the community’s supply of housing options available to people of modest and low income and to help reduce the threat of homelessness, which has grown even more severe during the pandemic.
